WHAT ARE REEL TO REEL TAPES WORTH!
Reel to Reel Tapes
Magnetic Tape Engineering Corp. (Magtec), was a custom tape duplication facility for 4-track open reel tape, 8-track and cassettes. The business operated from a 30,000 square foot warehouse in North Hollywood, California. The facility housed approximately 56 slave machines with an automated duplicating system. Magtec was comprised of a number of former executives from Magnetic Tape Duplicators (MTD)
This page is a work in progress I have lots to say about MAGTEC/ STEREOTAPE and their ultra rare "NOW 7 1/2 IPS" releases of audiophile tapes.
Feel Free to Contact us with questions or if you have Magtec/Stereotape 4-track reel to reel tapes for sale. We are eager to expand our collection of these tapes especially any of the "Now 7 1/2 ips" stickered tapes as seen on the picture to the left
As far as I can tell it was sometime in 1974 just after Magtec took over the duplication division of Ampex that the "NOW 7 1/2IPS" tapes were released. Record labels began to realize there was an audiophile market for reel tapes and began releasing in 7 1/2 ips. Rather than set up a new print run the 3 3/4 ips boxes and labels were used. Magtec simply stuck a sticker on the front of the box . Some of the stickers were on the shrink and some stuck directly to the front of the boxes.
Not all of these tapes have the sticker.. Stickers where placed on the box itself usually on the lower right but I have seen them on all four corners. and I have seen them on the shrink wrap like the tape on the right.
